Superman might leap tall buildings in a single bound, but even he can’t ward off its paralyzing effects. Is there something in your life you consider kryptonite? Maybe it’s, a person, someone who always brings you down when you reveal your true self.  It’s almost as if they have the ability to suck the blood out of your soul, like a living Dracula. Taking your otherwise positive outlook and transform you into what they are: a negative, defeated person.  It could be a boss or co-worker who, as soon as you see them coming, prompts you to feel you can’t do anything right.  Whatever the case your rendered powerless and weakened.

Maybe your kryptonite isn’t a person; maybe it’s a deadbeat job.  It could even be a certain food you can’t resist, and you overindulge and gain undesired weight. It could be drugs or alcohol, or smoking. Even peer pressure from friends and loved one’s can, in reality, be a disguise for those looking for their own benefits from you that in the end pull you down. How about your past, replaying your past failures and missteps can wreak havoc on your present holding you in fear of the next step? The result in all of these examples are the same: they drag you down and paralyze you from taking control of your future. Ask yourself, “What am I getting from all this?”

Instead of allowing you to reach your full potential, your kryptonite pulls you into its world. What happens to the true inner you? You end up muted, struggling to get out, trapped in a body and mind burning to be free. Do yourself a favor and break out! Even if you stumble and fall, rise to your own expectations and be the true you.  Whatever your kryptonite may be, take steps now to separate yourself from the circumstances that hold you back. Identify possible issues in your life, see them for what they are, and bring clarity forward in your heart and mind’s eye.

Here’s a few ideas to break free from your Kryptonite

What is it?

Take time to sit in a quiet place and think it through, the answer lies within you.  You already know what it is however,  you want to be sure about this before you move on.  Knowledge combined with your experience provides the clues here in filling in the blank, this is one place where the past can provide you with some answers.  Think it through from front to back before you prepare to apply this knowledge to change things for your future.

Make a Decision

You’re already on track with this one.  You recognize the situation, now see it for what it is and change it.  Simple enough right, however this requires you to not only decide but commit to avoiding the issue that holds you back and avoiding its power over you.   Easier said than done, however you must turn this into a “must do” and not a “should do” otherwise you will slip backwards into the kryptonite’s clutches once again.

Distance Yourself

Shield yourself from it by creating distance or boxing it out of your life, but make sure you control it – YOU control you.  No more excuses for yourself, no more giving in to what’s held you back.  You now recognize the issue, you’ve created space, rest up, and get ready for the next step.

Enlist Some Help

Sometimes we all need a little extra help to start the process of changing things in our lives. Don’t be afraid to admit you need a little extra push at the beginning.  Let go of your pride and reach out, there’s nothing wrong or weak about reaching out for help, in fact it’s smart and admirable. Someone you can bounce ideas off of, and someone holding you accountable goes a long way at the beginning

Take Massive Action

Step up, not down to the problem.  It’s time to act and take control of the situation and your life. Doing nothing is just that, nothing.  It’s time to move forward with precise action towards where you want to be and whom you want to be.  No more giving into the paralyzing effects of what’s held you back.  Break free to be the person you know lives within you, take action now, empower yourself, separate yourself through blood, sweat, and perseverance for your chosen future.

It’s time to believe in the person looking back at you in the mirror.  Reality check, kryptonite isn’t real and neither are these handcuffs.  We put these on ourselves as excuses to fall back on when things get tough in our lives.  It’s not a matter of whether you consider them real or not.  It’s the meaning and influence you allow yourself to attach to them that changes your course or halts your progress.

You have a choice to let these handcuffs dissolve before your eyes or stay chained to your fears. No matter where you are or who you are; you have the key. Decide today to unlock your true potential and leap to your destiny, it’s up to you.

What Exactly Happens When You Chase Perfection – Published in Become the Lion

photos-by-Lawrence-Schiller

Who’s out there chasing perfection?

Do you strive for that elusive result called perfection? Any person who leads a life striving for their personal best knows the mirage of perfection and knows perfection is not always possible, in fact, hardly ever. Sure, you may have moments of what could be perceived as perfection, that perfect hole in one, or that time everything went your way. In reality, were more than a few paces from “perfect” right?

So, then why do we try? Could it be your ego’s own way of seeing your full potential and what’s possible? Or maybe it’s that tireless pursuit of throwing your hands in the air and declaring victory!  As Vince Lombardi said, “Practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” Truth is, we are continuously evolving and changing as we move through life.  So, let’s focus on chasing perfection and attaining excellence for results.

Here are some ideas to help you in your pursuit.

Commit to Your Strengths

Highlight your strengths, point is, this where your power is. Herein lies a true asset you must take advantage of for success. You have strength in this area likely because you like to do it. Most times, you excel at what you’re good at because your heart is in it.  Other times, we get tangled up in working more on weakness and not focusing enough on what we do well. What happens when you focus only on building weaknesses? You end up with average results because you didn’t capitalize on your strengths enough to peak. Switch it up, engage in building on your strengths for massive results, follow your heart and reveal your inner strength for the greatest results.

What are you great at?

Hold Yourself Accountable

There is no way you can perform at your personal best or make your future a reality unless you and you alone hold yourself accountable. There will never be someone holding you down to get it done, you must do this yourself. Sure, you may have help, a good coach or a friend hoping for the best but, the bottom line is, it’s up to you. Write steps down, commit towards completing them by a set deadline. Don’t let it slide, stay true to the mission and your vision.

What’s first on your list today?

Commit to Success and Failure Equally

It’s far easier to commit to success since we can appreciate the potential results on the other side. But, making mistakes and coming up short once in while holds tremendous benefits that may go unseen in the midst of the struggle. We learn far more about our character in our defeats than we do in our successes. Don’t be afraid to embrace your missteps, they happen and they keep you awake and alert. You must be prepared to fall, or stumble, it’s OK. Just dust yourself off as you walk the path to your true purpose in life. Success will come in many forms big and small. The journey of just trying is success and experiencing the struggle is part of the ride. Stay the course and reach for your victory, it will come.

What have you done in the past that appeared to be a failure but, then turned out to bring more success overall?

Execute Well Under Pressure

Having the grit to drive forward and execute under pressure is what true champions are made of.  When the lights are the brightest these people blossom but, it didn’t happen overnight.  It was a conscious effort for years that got them there.  Improving yourself every day is a critical step in becoming who you believe you are inside, it’s what personal development is all about.  Be willing to live it daily, experience a taste what the future holds for you.  Start now by executing an action plan every day that brings you closer to your chosen future. This reaffirms to yourself, your commitment to success and builds the habit so when the time comes and the lights are on you’re ready.

What can you do today, to take a step closer?

Begin Modeling Those You Admire

This is not a new idea by any means but it works and makes sense.  Speed up the process, model those that are getting the results you are looking to attain. Modeling accelerates your progress and allows you to make bigger strides quicker. Find that person who has the physique you always wanted or that person who invests for profit and follow their footsteps to success. There’s plenty of great books out there that offer clues and recipes for success. Use your available resources to model new patterns of behavior and strive for maximum results.

What new behavior pattern would you like to model?

Never Stop Believing

Always give your best effort and never give up on yourself, ever. If you’re reading this, I doubt you start any goal planning on giving a minimal effort.  By striving for perfection, you improve daily in search of getting it right so to speak. Let’s take martial arts for an example, a martial artist beginner or master always drives for more effective kicks, strikes, or throws. It is said, a black belt is nothing more than a white belt that never quit. Believe you can do it no matter what the odds are, or who says you can’t get it done.  Fill your heart and mind with positive self-talk and take daily action towards your goals and dreams.  You too have a special talent within you, cultivate it, feed it, and never stop believing in yourself.

Ask yourself, am I ready to never give up?

Conclusion

Truth is, if you go all-out your successes will be significant. If you deliver a weak attempt, then the results and outcome will reflect your effort.  Drive for maximum results and deliver your best personal performance always. Reaching for excellence in all you do just makes sense. Avoid the perfectionism attitude of nothing is good enough, it can be self-defeating and a trap to unfulfillment. Accept yourself for whom you are, there is no other like you.  Remember this, you are unique in every way, nobody can be you better than yourself, you are the perfect you.  Make the most of it, commit to releasing yourself on the inside to let your heart sing on the outside. Go out into the world, reach for your dreams, meet your goals, and the incredible you will prevail. The road to perfection is a mirage. True perfection is next to impossible but personal excellence is available to you now, catch it, and go live it.

Success Magazine – How to Break Free and Really Live

How to Break Free and Really Live

No more sitting idle as life passes you by.
January 24, 2017

Are you stuck? Trapped in what’s become the norm in your life?

It’s almost like being intoxicated with acceptance that holds us within our routines. But we have the control and the ability to break free and make progress to a new and better normal. Sure, parts of our normal routines are alright, but don’t you want to add adventure to your life?

Breaking free will require a major commitment from you. You must find an undying belief in yourself, be prepared to work hard and have the willingness to challenge yourself to build enough momentum to escape the predictable.

It starts with a new mission. No more excuses, no more complacency, no more sitting idle as life passes you by. It starts with standing up, throwing your shoulders back and taking a leap of faith to change your world.

Related: Stop Making Excuses for Who and Where You Are

Here are six tips to help you break free from the norm:

1. Let go of the past.

Let go of the past. Let go of your failures. Let them float away as you move forward.

Sure, you might remember things that didn’t go your way. Learn from them, just don’t dwell them, on the could-have-beens and should-have beens. Let it all go, because that kind of mindset will only hold you back. You have the opportunity to live your life to the fullest, so grab it and hold on tight.

Is there anything you need to let go of for success?

2. Realize your purpose.

Your purpose is who you are; it’s your essence, and your dreams are to an extent limitless.

Ask yourself a few questions:

Get honest with yourself. Why wait until tomorrow, next week or someday? Find out who you really are inside and release your true purpose. Then run with it and love it.

What is the meaning in your life?

3. Aim high.

We all have one life to live, one chance to reach our potential. Sometimes we’ve held our dreams down for so long, we don’t even realize our own potential anymore and where it can take us.

See the possibilities and successes instead of the obstacles. Get serious about your aspirations. Set aside some time to grow your dreams, and stretch what lies within you. No more waiting, no more standing around. Work hard and make it happen.

What’s your highest potential, and are you willing to go after it?

4. Lead with why.

Dig down deep and ask yourself, Why am I doing this?

What are you going to get out of this in the long run? How will your success affect not only you but those around you? Imagine the emotional fulfillment you will experience, the richness you will feel as you realize why you are doing things, rather than drifting without clear meaning in your life.

What is your why? Why are you here?

5. Release your inner passion.

Within us lies great emotion. It’s the essence of what makes us human.

Unleash your passion to fuel the fire within your heart and soul. Your passion can take you to great heights if you focus it and use it to fuel your purpose. Let your heart and mind steer your passion for positive outcomes toward your future.

What is your true passion? What makes you get up in the morning?

6. Empower yourself.

Take a chance on you. Acknowledge that this is the moment. Breathe in the inspiration of your dreams and feel your potential rising. It only takes one step that leads to another that leads to significant results, if you allow yourself the opportunity to try.

So dream big, but don’t dream your life away waiting for it to happen for you. Without action, your idea is just an idea.

What is within your power this moment to make your life happen?

Either you break free or you don’t. The time is now, the choice yours. It’s your time to shine, your time to fly, your time to live.

6 Ways To Create a Compelling Vision for Your Future

create-a-compelling-vision-for-your-futureHave you ever been standing there in the doorway of what’s next?

Are you wondering, what should I do with my life?

So often we pull back from these moments unprepared to execute a plan, not because we don’t want to change, but simply because we just don’t have a plan.

What you’re looking for is a new “vision” for yourself—one that will ignite your spirit, fueled by the energy within your heart, and transform your life into a new reality.

Here’s the good news: believe it or not, you’re in the right place for change. Step through this doorway with the spirit of possibility and a focused vision for your future.

Here are 6 ways to create a compelling vision for your future.

Slow down

All too often we are in such reaction to what’s going on around us, the phone, the car, the job, the continuous pressing noise that surrounds our daily life.

Hang it all up for a little while. Sometimes we never put aside any time for ourselves to heal and adjust to our surroundings, let alone set a course for the future.

Stop, take some real time for yourself, use this time to just be by yourself for a little while, free from all the distractions in your life.

Sit and think about what you want your life to be like and what you want it to represent.

Clear your Mind

Find a quiet place to be alone with your thoughts for a while, really spend some time with your inner self.

Take some real deep diaphragmatic breaths in and out, just feel the air passing your lips while you clear your mind.

When you arrive at a clear, open space in your mind, what do you hear? What is your inner voice saying to you?

What’s really important to you, what are you really passionate about, what are you great at? What is your true purpose in life?

 Think Big

Now is not the time to hold back, now is the time to let go.

Think about what you are capable of and reach for the maximum outcome.

If you aim high, your successes will be monumental.  If you shoot too low, who cares, right?

Take this time to dream about the possibilities and what you can do if you put your heart and soul into it.

Truly step outside the norm and think about what you could accomplish if you put your heart into it, really let go, and dream about the possibilities for a while.

Get Focused

Once you have a clear picture of what’s important to you and what you’re capable of, it will be time to focus on what that really is.

See your vision for yourself in full detail as if it were already completed.  See every single angle of this vision, know what it feels like to accomplish it, and feel what it would be like to represent it.

Clarity is key; you must completely know what your vision will look like from front to back, side to side, inside and out.

Believe in Yourself

Your spirit lies in your belief of “what if” and the possibilities of what you are capable of.

When you find yourself on the edge of self-doubt, stop and say, “yes,” I can do this, this is really who I am and who I am about to become!

Accept nothing less than your personal best for yourself and take things one step at a time. Small steps lead to giant leaps over time.

Remember a time when you experienced success, hold those thoughts and feelings close to your heart, and remember, you can do it, and you’ve succeeded before, and this time there’s no stopping you.

Take Action

Once you’ve developed your vision, you must take a step towards it in order to start the process.

If not, it’s just leaving another idea you had before left to wash away and be forgotten. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, just a small step to symbolize the beginning of this next journey in your life.

Prove to yourself that you are committed to making this a reality, serve yourself a taste of the future.

Remember, this is only the beginning, time is ticking off right in front of you.

What you do with your time shapes your destiny, so make every day count.  Where you focus your heart is who you really are, and what you leave behind.

What you do with your spirit will light up your soul forever. What you see with your vision you will live today and how decisions will be made for tomorrow.

Visualize your future as rewarding and exciting, recognize your personal best is available to you right now, be the true you, and live the adventure of a lifetime— your lifetime, your vision!

Interview with Simple Continuous Improvement

ryanQ&A With Michael Annese, Author of The Victory Cycle

So The Victory Cycle is a book for anyone looking to achieve their full potential?

Yes, the idea behind the Victory Cycle is that you can apply it to any goal you want to achieve. I wanted to create a system that was simple to identify with but was deep enough to make lasting change. Victory is an acronym: V-Vision, I-Inspiration, C-Commitment, T-Timed Steps, O-Obstacles, R-Rejoice, Y-Yearlong Adjustments.

Let’s look at a real example, understanding of course that this is about as brief as it can get. Say you’re looking to start a business.

It all starts with your “Vision.”  You would look deep into what you want your business to be about. What kind of business, what kind of service or product would you create? Remember back to when things seemed totally possible and you had all the optimism in the world within you as you decide what to make as your new business. Your Vision of your business would be a direct reflection of who you are. Make your business your “purpose.” So, you would certainly want to make money, but more importantly you have to really love what you’re doing otherwise it just becomes work, right?

Next, what’s your “Inspiration?” Basically, what is it that is inspiring you to open this business, what makes you want to get up out of bed in the morning and chase it down? In essence what’s your “Why?” Once you find that inspiration, hold onto it tight because you’ll need it later when things get tough, and they always do.

Now, commit!  Your “Commitment” is your how. In truth, it’s your sheer determination of getting this business off the ground. The level of commitment we’re talking about is almost life or death, because without deep seated commitment you will lose your grip on your dreams. You must absolutely commit fully to this new business venture or it will fail.

Your “Timed Steps” is your plan. You must time out some steps in order to track and hold your progress, otherwise you’re just drifting along. Planning along the way creates organization, and with organization comes real progress. That’s what we’re looking for. Small steps add up to giant leaps over time, don’t bite off more than you can chew, make them significant but manageable.

“Obstacles” are just that, things that show up in your path to Victory. Anticipate them, overcome them at all costs, but don’t let your train to success become derailed as a result of them. Think about some potential obstacles that may show up within your business plan.

“Rejoice” is enjoying life along the way. You must celebrate what you’re doing and your progress up to this point. Life is to be enjoyed and so is all of your hard work.

“Yearlong Adjustments” are all about checking your course during your journey. If you don’t check what’s working with this new business and what’s not working you’ll just end up in a more challenging situation later if you don’t address it early. Capitalize on what’s going well and fix what’s not working.

Of course this is a cycle, so all of this must add back up to your “Vision” back at the beginning. Keep cycling through and polish your Victory until it becomes real and strong. You could apply the cycle to weight loss, finding a job, getting a promotion, or running that marathon you always wanted too. Virtually any goal or mission can enter the cycle and you can break it down within the concept.

Leading people through an emergency situation takes quick decision making – how do you step back and improve for the next time?

At the fire department, we do something called a Post Incident Analysis (PIA), where we discuss what went wrong and what went right. Also discussed are ways to improve and prevent situations from happening in the first place. It’s really a session to learn and grow from. There’s always something that can be learned from reviewing what happened. Same thing happens in the “Y-Yearlong Adjustments,” review what’s going well and what you can improve on for the betterment of your goal over all.  Make those changes and try again.

You have a lot of motivating visuals in your book – did this develop from what you saw in the line of duty?

The graphic of the cycle was created as a result of my education with personal development. I liked the idea of a repeatable concept for success. We are basically constantly re-inventing ourselves, growing and changing.  The circle of fire represents birth and rebirth of who we are.  Particularly when it comes to the “O-Obstacle” portion within the cycle. Simply stated, that’s where we earn our character, that’s where we are forged into the man or women we truly are and become as a result of our failures and defeats. Similar to a sword that is heated and cooled for strength, so are we within our challenges and obstacles in life.

You’ve been on tour promoting The Victory Cycle – what’s a recent decision you’ve made to benefit your readers?

The main decision I have made is to really strive the issue of urgency. All too often we hear a good idea, we like what we hear and even agree. Too often though, we leave a class where we learned something good and waist time getting started. The Victory Cycle is about immediate action, in other words what are you going to do today towards your goal? No matter how small a step, take at least one, and plan the next one tomorrow. Feel the urgency of your dreams in your heart and soul. Chase them down with a sense of urgency, don’t let them fade away into the past. You can do it, just believe in yourself.

Step through this doorway with the spirit of possibility and a focused new vision for your future.

6 Ways To Create a Compelling Vision For Your Future.

1. Slowdown

All too often we are in such reaction to what’s going on around us, the phone, the car, the job, the continuous pressing noise that surrounds our daily life. Hang it all up for a little while. Sometimes we never put aside any time for ourselves to heal and adjust to our surroundings, forget set a course for the future.  Stop, take some vital time for yourself, use this time to just be by yourself for a little while free from all the distractions in your life. Sit and think about what you want your life to be like and what you want it to represent.

2. Clear your Mind

Find a quiet place to be alone with your thoughts for a while, really spend some time with your inner self.  Take some deep diaphragmatic breaths in and out, just feel the air passing your lips while you clear your mind.  When you arrive at a clear open space in your mind, what do you hear? What is your inner voice saying to you? What’s actually important to you, what are you really passionate about, what are you great at?

3. Think Big

Now is not the time to hold back, now is the time to let go. Think about what you are capable of and reach for the maximum outcome. If you aim high your successes will be monumental.  If you shoot too low, who cares right? Take this time to dream about the possibilities and what you can do if you put your heart and soul into it. Truly step outside the norm and think about what you could accomplish if you put your heart into it, genuinely let go and dream about the possibilities for a while.

4. Get Focused

Once you have a clear picture of what’s important to you, and what you’re capable of, now it’s time to focus on what that really is.  See your vision for yourself in full detail as if it were already completed.  See every single angle of this vision, know what it feels like to accomplish it and feel what it would be like to represent it. 6. Take Action

Once you’ve developed your vision, you must take a step towards it in order to start the process. If not, your new vision will just dissolve into nothing, and slowly wash away and be forgotten.  It doesn’t have to be overwhelming just a small step to symbolize the beginning of this next journey in your life. Prove to yourself that you are committed to making this a reality, serve yourself a taste of the future.

Remember this is only the beginning, time is ticking off right in front of you. 6 Steps to Creating Your Future: A simple framework for shifting your life and creating your future

Are you standing in the ‘What’s next?’ doorway? Are you wondering what you should do with your life? 1 – Slow Down

2 – Clear Your Mind

Find a quiet place to be alone with your thoughts, to really spend some time with your inner self. Take some deep diaphragmatic breaths in and out. Feel the air passing your lips while you clear your mind. When you arrive at a clear, open space in your mind, what do you hear? What is your inner voice saying to you? What’s really important to you, what are you really passionate about, what are you great at? What is your true purpose in life?

3 – Think Big

Now is not the time to hold back; now is the time to let go. Think about what you are capable of and reach for the maximum outcome. If you aim high, your successes will be monumental. If you shoot too low, who cares, right? Take this time to dream about the possibilities and what you can do if you put your heart and soul into it. Truly step outside the norm and think about what you could accomplish if you bring your full self to it. Really let go and dream about the possibilities for a while.

4 – Get Focused

Once you have a clear idea of what’s important to you and what you’re capable of, it is time to focus on what that really looks like. See your vision for yourself in full detail, as if it were already completed. Imagine every single angle of this vision. Feel what it would be like to embody this image. Clarity is key; you must completely know what your vision will look like from front to back, side to side, inside and out.

5 – Believe in Yourself

Your spirit lies in your belief in ‘what if’ and the possibilities of what you are capable of accomplishing. When you find yourself on the edge of self-doubt, stop and say: “Yes, I can do this. This is really who I am and who I am about to become!” Accept nothing less than your personal best for yourself and take things one step at a time. Small steps lead to giant leaps over time. Remember a time when you experienced success. Hold those thoughts and feelings close to your heart, and remember that you can do it. You’ve succeeded before and this time there’s no stopping you.

6 – Take Action

Once you’ve developed your vision, you must take a step towards it in order to start the process of change. If not, you’re just leaving another idea left to wash away and be forgotten. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming — just a small step to symbolize the beginning of this next journey in your life. Prove to yourself that you are committed to making this a reality by serving yourself a taste of your future.

Remember, this is only the beginning. Time is ticking off right in front of you. What you do with your time shapes your destiny, so make every day count. Where you focus your heart is who you really are and what you will leave behind. What you do with your spirit will light up your soul forever. What you see with your vision is how you will live today and how decisions will be made for tomorrow. Visualize your future as rewarding and exciting, and recognize that your personal best is available to you right now. Be the true you and live the adventure of a lifetime—your lifetime, your vision!
